September 29, 2022

We have had an eventful week.  Our class participated in the Terry Fox run, and we drew a portrait of Terry.

Every week, we have been walking around the school to look at the leaves on the trees to see what colours we can spot.  So far, we have seen "hojas de color amarilla, naranja, verde, cafe, roja y morada "(yellow, orange, green brown and purple leaves)

We had our pictures taken today, and got new library books.

We also started some new learning centers, including Roll and Build, Step by Step Drawing, and Count the Apples and Record.

We have been learning about Indigenous ways of knowing, including the tradition and meaning behind sharing circles and talking sticks. We are asking children to go on an outdoor walk this weekend, and search for a stick approximately 30 cm long/5 cm in diameter to bring to school. We will be painting and creating our own talking sticks to share at home with our families. Please bring a stick to school on Monday, October 3, or Tuesday, October 4, whichever day your child is at school.

Today we watched this video.  We will wear our Orange Shirts on Monday, October 3.

We will begin learning the Spanish words for "Las partes de la cara" (The parts of the face)

Ojos - eyes
Nariz - nose
Boca - mouth
Dientes - teeth
Orejas - ears

This week we learned about Terry Fox.  We read books about his life, watched a video and discussed why he was a Canadian hero.  We talked about the difference between a hero and a superhero, and sorted pictures into the correct category.

We are continuing to learn about patterning.  Today, the children demonstrated their understanding of patterning using a variety of materials.

Here are some patterning action songs we have been exploring.

Today we went to the Library for the very first time and the children chose two books to borrow for the week. If your child's backpack is not large enough for 2 hardcover books, please consider sending a reusable bag to carry these books separately, or using a larger backpack. Our book exchange day is on WEDNESDAY'S.

This week we started Literacy Centers.  The children rotated though Alphabet Puzzles, Find the Letter, Build Your Name and Pattern Block letters.

We also read the book, "The Dot".  We painted some plates by using a dot in the middle, then painting circles around it.

We completed our First Day of School picture, by colouring the outside with AB patterns.

September 7, 2022

Today was our first full day of Kindergarten.  We had a very busy day with lots of firsts; first music class, first lunch at school, first time playing on the playground etc.

Please take note of the following information items to ensure a smooth transition to the full day kindergarten program.

1 - Footwear.  Please ensure that your child has a pair of labelled inside shoes (slip on or velcro is best).  We change our shoes many times a day, and shoes that are easy to get on and off are invaluable.

2 - Snack/Lunch - Your child will need a full lunch and a separate snack for the day.  Please tell your child  what food is for snack and what is for lunch, so they don't inadvertently eat all their food for snack.  Some parents find a separate container for snack works well.  Have your child practice opening and closing containers by themselves.  Food items with difficult packaging such as fruit cups, cheese strings etc would be best removed from packaging at home and put in a separate container.  The children have approximately 20 minutes to eat and we want to ensure that that time is spent eating, not waiting for the lunch supervisor to open containers.  Please label all containers with your child's name.  Schools in the CBE have a "Boomerang lunch" policy; anything that comes from home, goes back home and not in the garbage can at school.  This way you are able to see what your child has eaten, and allows proper sorting of compost, garbage and recycling.

3 - Extra clothes - Accidents happen.  Please put an extra change of clothes (including socks and underwear) in your child's backpack in a ziplock bag.  While we do have spare clothing if the need arises, it's always better to be in your own clothes.

4 - Backpacks - Your child will need a large backpack, big enough to fit a hardcover library book.  We will be starting our book exchange soon. If this is not possible, please put a reusable bag in your child's backpack to transport books between home and school.

Here are some of the songs we have been working on in Spanish.
