RAZ KIDS - IMPORTANT

Today in your child's backpack you will find a small piece of paper with the log in information for Raz Kids.  The older students use this program mostly for Home Reading.  For children in Kindergarten, we would like the children to be LISTENING to at least 2 stories a week in Spanish.  This will provide extra opportunities for children to hear spoken Spanish and connect it to pictures in books.  Of course, if your child is reading or interested in learning to read, they can explore the books in English and Spanish.

At our conferences, many parents have asked how they can support their children at school.  This is one way to do so!  :)

Please let me know if you have any difficulties logging in, questions etc.

All About Me Project - IMPORTANT

For our citizenship and identity unit, we will be focusing on learning about how we are all unique, with different family origins and traditions. Your child will be given the opportunity to share this information with the class by completing a project at home. Your child may create a poster, diorama, book, PowerPoint presentation, video, or even bring artifacts from home as a way to share this information about themselves and their family. Use your imagination with the format and have fun as a family creating this presentation. Some ideas to include are:

Home languageCountries of origin before family immigrated to Canada, if not IndigenousSpecial traditions and celebrationsCultural clothingSpecial songsActivities enjoyed as a familyFamily membersPlease feel free to use these ideas as a starting point and adapt them as you’d like.  We will be starting these presentations the week of December 5.  I will send an email to you with your child's sharing day.

November 29, 2022 - Family photo

We are starting to learn about our families and how they are the same and different.

Please send a family photo to school ASAP, so that your child can introduce the members of their family.  We will need these pictures to stay at school for a few weeks at which time they will be sent home.  A photocopy of a picture is just fine, if you don't want to send an actual photograph.

This week, we finished up our Sound Kreations residency.  Ask your child to tell you about some of the moves we did!

Today, we created a person out of shapes.  This seems like a simple task, but it had many layers.  We talked about proportions of body parts; grande/pequeno, largo/corto (big, small, long, short) and the children needed to choose shapes that worked according to these parameters.  They also needed to count the number of shapes they used, and record the number on their paper.

Today, I sent home the children's visual journals as well as a copy of their EYE assessment.  Please take a look through your child's work with them, and return the book tomorrow during conferences or next Monday.  We will be discussing the results of the EYE, as well as work products during our conference tomorrow or Friday.

I have told the children they are not to colour, print, take out pages etc.  It is only to look through, and then to return.  This is the ONLY WORKBOOK that we use for the entire year, so please take very good care of it.  :)

Ask your child about Sound Kreations and the new dance moves that they are learning!

Please ensure that you have read the email about the AHS declared outbreak at Dalhousie.  If you have any questions, please email dalhousie@cbe.ab.ca.

Thank you to those families who have paid their fees for swimming, Sound Kreations or field trips.  Fees can be paid through your MyCBE account.  Prompt payment is appreciated as any unpaid fees impacts the programming that the school can offer.

Our virtual book fair starts today and can be accessed through this link.  Students will have an in-person opportunity to purchase books as well either during the day on November 22, 23, 24 or in the evening from 5-8 on November 24.

A reminder that conferences are being held next week on November 24 & 25.  Please see the separate email that was sent for information on how to book.

As a reminder around traffic safety, there is no parking or entering the school parking lot at any time. Please also be respectful and mindful of the parking, no stopping and Hug & Go zones around the school.   The Hug & Go Zone is meant for a vehicle to be there for under a minute.  Your child should be able to exit the vehicle independently and have their backpack with them in order to use this area.  The Hug & Go Zone is not meant as a waiting zone for families to pick up their child after school by remaining in their vehicle.    We continue to receive complaints from our neighbors regarding families who park in front of their garage is blocking access as well as reports of near misses. Safety over convenience it is not just a phraseIt needs to be a mindset and continued action. The Calgary Parking Authority as well as the Calgary Police Service will be coming out for education and enforcement. Dalhousie School has no ability or authority to have any in fractions and accompanying fines waived.  Thank you for collectively being conscious about traffic safety for our students, your children and our families, you.

This week, we continued to learn about El dia de los muertos.  We created our own "calaveras" (skulls) and decorated them symmetrically with bright colours, just like in Mexico.

We started learning about the meaning behind Remembrance Day and created these beautiful poppies using balloons and paint.  Ask your child about the procedure!

Through both of these projects, the children learned about measurement (big enough, too big, too small etc) and comparing sizes using words such as "grande y pequeño" (big and small)

This week, your child received a permission form to participate in the Sound Kreations residency.  After passing them out, I found a couple on the floor after school.  If the form did not arrive home, please let me know and I will send a new one home.

This past week, we explored some Halloween centers.  The children made fences, gates and houses for pumpkins out of a variety of materials, created a card, made an ABC pattern out of Halloween pictures and measured using cubes.

We also began learning about "El dia de los muertos" (Day of the Dead) which is celebrated in many Spanish speaking countries, especially in Mexico.

Check out these two songs we are learning.  One is from the movie, Coco.
